Students injured in attack

MASERU — Seven students from Itekeng High School in Maseru were injured on Monday after they were attacked with knives and stones.

The students were celebrating after they won the Litsoanya Choral Music Competition when they were ambushed by students from the Lesotho Opportunities Industrialisation Centre (Loic), a vocational school for dropouts and adults.

One of the students was admitted at Queen ’Mamohato Memorial Hospital with serious injuries.

A nurse at the hospital, ’Makhabane Lephoto, told the Lesotho Times some students sustained serious injuries during the attack.

Lephoto said one boy had several wounds and a deep cut on the chest which caused blood to drip into his lungs.

Other students were treated as outpatients.

The students were attacked for allegedly “making noise”.

Itekeng High School principal, ’Matsoakae Mohlerepe, said she was shocked by the viciousness of the attack.

“We were celebrating after winning the awards, students were singing and celebrating. When they passed near Loic we were told that the students there complained that our students were making noise,” Mohlerepe said.

“Loic students started pelting our students with stones while others were stabbed with knives during the attack,” she said.

Loic Director Paseka Sekhesa apologised for the attack.

“We are aware of the incident and we are not proud of what our students did,” Sekhesa said.

Deputy Minister of Education, Apesi Ratšele, said what happened on Monday was unacceptable.

“We have been informed that seven students were assaulted during a fight between Itekeng High School students and those from Loic,” Retšele said.

He said this type of behaviour should stop immediately.

Police spokesperson Masupha Masupha said he had not received a report about this incident.

  9. These LOIC dropouts must be arrested and prosecuted. What about the severely injured student who was stabbed by knife that caused blood to drip into his lungs? If survives these injuries sustained, possibly this student might be suffering for the rest of his life. So, these dropouts must go and rot in jail. We are sick and tired of students criminals. They shouldn’t have place amongst the society. LOIC dropouts were bitter and jealous that they didn’t have brains to further their studies like these Itekeng students. So,these stupid idiots decided to brutalise our children and the law must take its course.
