Nedbank presents a cow to the King

MASERU — Nedbank Lesotho presented a three-year old Jersey cow as a belated birthday present to His Majesty King Letsie III in Matsieng on Tuesday.

King Letsie III celebrated his 49th birthday on July 17 in Mohale’s Hoek.

Nedbank Lesotho managing director, Lazarus Murahwa, said the present was delayed as they wanted to make sure it was the perfect present for the king.

“Your Majesty, on this occasion we are presenting to you a three-year old Jersey cow named Amperplaas Lirsk Alanis. It is a member of the Alanis family, which is one of the oldest cow families and comprises many top producers and show cows,” Murahwa said

“It is currently carrying its second calf and is expected to give birth in early December. We hope that it will serve Your Majesties well and that it will live to its full expectation.

“I am told that a cow has a very important role in Basotho culture to the extent that Basotho call it Molimo o nko e metsi (a god with a wet nose).

“It is through it that life-time bonds and friendships such as marriage are established,” he said.

Murahwa said the cow was a symbol of the long-lasting bond between Nedbank Lesotho and the Royal Family.

King Letsie conveyed his deepest gratitude for the present.

“Even though the present was delayed it is very much welcome as I love cattle,” he said.

He said the present given to him will increase the herd he already has.
