MASERU — The Lesotho Amateur Boxing Association (LABA) is hosting a five-day Zone VI boxing tournament that started yesterday and ends tomorrow.
The tournament is taking place at the Examination Council of Lesotho premises in Khubetsoana, about 6 km north of the city.
The main purpose of the tournament is to prepare the southern Africa region for the African Boxing Championship that will take place in Lome, Togo, next month.
Only boxers who will win gold or silver medals in the regional tournament will qualify for Togo.
The participating countries are Angola, Botswana, Swaziland, Namibia, Lesotho and Zambia.
They are competing in light fly, fly, bantam, feather, light welter, welter, middle, light heavy and heavyweight categories.
LABA public relations officer ‘Mpoi Matete said they had expected nine countries to turn up for the gala but only five arrived in the country on Tuesday.
“Nine countries were supposed to participate in this tournament but only Angola, Botswana, Swaziland, Zambia and Namibia arrived in the country on Tuesday,” she said.
Lesotho is represented by 11 boxers — Rorisang Matete (48kg), Neo Thamahane (51kg), Moeketsi Lekopa (54kg), Thabiso Nketu (57kg), Peter Marie (60kg), Kokole Paneng (64kg), Mokhachane Moshoeshoe (69kg), Lungile Namokete (75kg), Tieo Ntulo (81kg) and Reatile Thahane (91+ kg).
Lesotho’s representatives were selected during an open national boxing competition held in Maseru last month.
