LDF confirm title favourites tag

MASERU — While Easter is a time for families to enjoy and relax, for others it’s a time when destinies are shaped and dreams crushed in the never-ending labour of a Premier League season.

For LDF, Easter was a confirmation of their status as title favourites.

After a wobble against Joy last week, the league pacesetters were emphatic in thumping bottom boys Sekamaneng Young Stars 4-0 on Friday before beating Likhopo 1-0 on Sunday.

While both outcomes brought maximum points, LDF’s performances were like chalk and cheese.

As much as Young Stars seemed determined to roll over, Likhopo came to fight.

Indeed, for much of the game it seemed as was Likhopo, not LDF, who were top of the Premier League.

That was until defender Tumane Lethakha popped up with an 85th-minute winner for the army side in a game that, were it not for LDF’s Sello Ramakau’s brilliance, Likhopo would have won.

However, championship sides need that sort of luck and it’s the luck — and points — that Lioli didn’t have over Easter.

While LDF collected six points, Lioli only managed two, chalking up identical one-all draws against Linare on Friday and Rovers on Sunday.

It meant defending champions LCS leapfrogged Lioli into second place.

However like LDF, on the same Central Prison, LCS were for large parts of their 3-1 win over Lerotholi on Sunday second best.

But goals win games.

Before that stern test LCS had comfortably beaten Majantja on Friday.

Bottom side Young Stars lived to fight another day after earning a point against Joy on Sunday, their first of any sort in 18 games.

However the basement boys, eight points from safety, are only delaying the inevitable.

That is because elsewhere at the foot of the table Naughty Boys and Butha-Buthe Roses, in 14th and 13th, both picked up vital wins.

Naughty Boys beat Butha-Buthe Roses 2-1 in a Qacha’s Nek in a relegation duel on Friday, before Roses dusted themselves off to beat Swallows 2-0 in Butha-Buthe on Sunday.

That means two-time league champions Majantja, despite having two games in hand, still look vulnerable.
