WITH the festive season upon us, Maluti Mountain Brewery (MMB) has embarked on a drive to discourage alcohol abuse.
MMB Managing Director, Tom Mpeli, announced last week that the company is involved in a number of activities to bring attention to the consequences of abusing alcohol.
“MMB has a zero tolerance approach to alcohol abuse, both by its employees and customers,” Mr Mpeli said last Friday.
“Our employees are tested for alcohol when they enter and leave our premises to ensure they do not abuse alcohol. We also have counselling programmes for our staff and their families.
“Retailers often serve alcohol to their customers who are already drunk. Therefore, MMB recently trained 40 retailers on responsible alcohol serving so they can be able to tell their customers when they have had enough.
According to Mr Mpeli, the SABMiller group, of which MMB is an affiliate, has launched a website (www.TalkingAlcohol.com) which provides health and general consumer information on alcohol and responsible consumption. MMB is also exploring ways of localising the content of the website, especially for the young generation, he said.
The brewery has also produced a phone-in radio programme on a local station called Talking Alcohol whereby health experts, psychologists and other professionals discuss the dangers of excessive alcohol consumption, and how societal factors often come into play in terms of how people relate to and use alcohol. He said that the programme will be revived and extended to other media platforms.
MMB, Mr Mpeli added, has partnered with the department of road safety to conduct educational campaigns for drivers during the peak holidays to sensitise them on the dangers of drinking and driving.
“We are also partnering with the ministries and other related institutions to raise awareness on alcohol responsibility,” he said.
